Grade Level(s): 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12

Subject(s):

  • Science/Entomology

Duration: one or two hour long sessions

Description: This lesson will provide students the opportunity to get outside and discover the world around them. It will enable students to learn about the bugs/insects that are all around.

Goals: The goal of this activity is to get the students to take a closer look at what is around them. To get the students to notice even the smallest of creatures.

Objectives: The students will be able to:

  • Label a picture of a bug/insect with the correct name
  • Draw a picture of a bug/insect given only it’s name
  • Materials: magnifying glasses, scientific name books, list of bugs, pen/pencil for each student

    Procedure:

  • Draw a picture of a beetle, or any bug/insect you can, on the board. Ask if anyone can tell you what it is called.
  • Say a name of a different bug/insect. Ask for a volunteer to draw this on the board.
  • Separate the class into groups of two’s and three’s.
  • Give each student a bug/insect list.
  • Give each group one magnifying glass and make sure everyone has a utensil to write with.
  • One group at a time, have the students go to their lockers and get their coats.
  • Once outside, discuss the boundaries of this activity.
  • Explain that they are to find each listed bug/insect and also to note it’s color or anything unusual.
  • Emphasize that each student in the group must see the insect/bug before it counts.
  • Let them at it!
  • Assessment: The students will be assessed two ways:

  • They will be asked to identify a given number of bugs/insects by picture.
  • They will be asked to draw a picture of a bug/insect given the name.
