Answers to questions that are frequently asked by
LM_NET members.
This listing of questions frequently asked (and answered) on LM_NET has been created in hope of reducing some of the repetition encountered by our members. Members may wish to save the FAQ for quick reference. We post this list frequently, note in subject line when changes are made, and mark in the contents with an asterisk(*) items updated that issue. This section of the FAQ includes the technical information and hints to best use LM_NET.
Retired FAQ's may be visited at the website http://www.eduref.org/lm_net/retiredfaqs.htm.
We can take no responsibility for accuracy of information that comes from

******** 1. Subscribing to LM_NET
********
***************************
1. Send an e-mail message to: LISTSERV@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU
2. In the first line of the message, type:
SUBSCRIBE
LM_NET Firstname Lastname
(Of course, you would substitute your actual name
in the line, such as
"SUBSCRIBE LM_NET Libby Rarian" No
quotes necessary)
The LM_NET listserv computer will respond with an informative message, which will ask for a confirmation. You will then be added if you properly followed the directions.
*********************
****** 2. Signing off LM_NET
******
**********************
In the event that you want to quit/sign
off from LM_NET....
1. Send these words in the first (and only)
line of a message:
signoff
lm_net *Please do not include any other words in the message,
including signature files!
2. Send your signoff message to: listserv@listserv.syr.edu and
you will be dropped.
(No other words
are necessary.)
Important Note for Netscape Mail Users:
Netscape and perhaps some other graphical e-mailers require confirmation. The
Listserv software recognized that Netscape and certain other e-mail software
allows easy faking of return addresses, so Listserv
has built in a response
confirmation required checking system for all signoff requests from such
e-mailers. In this case, please allow time to reply to the automated message
that you will receive very soon after requesting to sign off!
P L E A S E do _NOT_ send the message to LM_NET. It will go to over 14,000+ members of the discussion group, creating ill will and consternation among our happy members. Send it ONLY to: listserv@listserv.syr.edu
If you are unable to sign-off alone, contact the managers-owners of the list,
and ask them to remove you (pmilbury@eduref.org or mike@eduref.org). We will do it
as soon as it is humanly possible.

********** 3. Temporarily Stopping Mail
From LM_NET **********
*****************************************
If you want to stop
receiving mail from LM_NET for a period of time, all you have to do is send a
specific message to the listserv computer which handles LM_NET mail.
Send the message to this address: listserv@listserv.syr.edu
On the first (and only) line of the message, type: set lm_net nomail
To restart your LM_NET mail, send to the same address, the following: set lm_net mail
************************************************
********** 4. Checking the
status of your LM_NET subscription **********
************************************************
If you ever set
yourself to nomail or mail has stopped arriving from LM_NET, and you are
wondering if you are still subscribed, you can check your status by doing this:
1. Send a message to: LISTSERV@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU
2. on the first line of your message type: q lm_net
(Do not include your ID or signature file in the message.)
A few minutes later you should receive a message from LM_NET listserver. It will either tell you you are not subscribed, or it will give you a status report, such as the one I obtained by this process a few minutes ago.

********** 5. Dealing with e-mail address
changes **********
*****************************************
Here is how to
deal with e-mail address changes when you know ahead that yours will be
changing. This is recommended even if your old address will be forwarding mail
to your new address, due to the way LM_NET responds to return addresses.
Here is what we recommend.
Step 1. Sign off using old e-mail: If possible, while you have
access to your (soon to be) old e-mail
address, use it to sign off.
Step 2. Resubscribe using your new e-mail: When you have your new address, simply resubscribe using that e-mail service.
Step 3. If you can't do step 1 above: If you can't access your old
address, then let me know what that address is, and I will drop it.

********** 6. LM_NET Keywords for Subject
Headings **********
***************************************
Those posting to
LM_NET are asked to help the LM_NET community by using clear, concise subject
headings indicating the content of the message. Prefacing the detailed
subject with one of our accepted keywords saves time and energy of all those who
read the list. Subject headings greatly aid searching the archives, also.
Currently recommended keyword headings are:
TARGET: request for
information to be compiled for a HIT:
HIT: the compiled
information from the TARGET request
GREET: for requests for greetings
TECH: for PC
& MAC software & hardware discussions
REF: requests for all
types of reference questions
JOBS: postings of job vacancies
ELEM: postings
for kindergarten to 5th grade topics
MIDDLE: postings for middle school topics
SEC:
postings for secondary grades (9 to 12)
GEN: anything that
doesn't fit the other categories
HUMOR: anything humorous or not to be
taken too seriously :-)
When in doubt about which to choose pick GEN:
A Subject header might look like these:
Subject: GEN: Special movie on PBS
tonight
Subject: REF,SEC: Info on World
War II
HIT: Accelerated Reading vs
Reading Counts
Comments: The TOPIC KEYWORD or KEYWORDS must be followed by a COLON and a BLANK SPACE before the regular description.

****** 7. Finding the LM_NET
Archives, Website, etc. ******
*****************************************
The LM_NET
Archives, membership directory, and other related information are available at
the AskERIC World Wide Website, and also linked via LM_NET On the Web. http://www.eduref.org/lm_net/
To find the LM_NET Message Archives:
1. Go directly to the
host website, at AskERIC.
http://www.eduref.org/Virtual/Listserv_Archives/LM_NET.html
There you will find several options. You may browse by date or thread, subject or author, or may do a keyword search of current and past LM_NET messages. Messages are organized by year and month in folders. If you have been set to NOMAIL, you may wish to browse the current messages for subject headings of interest to you. Also try limiting the number by using these terms: year=1999 month=October
If you search the archives using these terms: Harry Potter and HIT and year=1999, you will receive more than 226 documents. Perhaps one of these will answer your questions. If you are interested in Accelerated Reader vs Reading Counts, you can access over 130 posts this year simply by typing in Reading Counts and year=1999.
2. Another way to access them is by going to the LM_NET On the Web Page:
http://www.eduref.org/lm_net/
Once at the "LM_NET On the Web Page", scroll down just a bit until you see the section title: The Web LM_NET Archives. This points to a search engine which allows access to LM_NET's Archives, plus the archives of several other online groups that are archived at AskERIC. There is also a link to the LM_NET archives listed by month and year.

***** 8. Signature
Files
*****
*****************************
LM_NET has adopted a policy of required
identification within all messages posted to LM_NET. A signature file should not
be too long. Please start the habit of including your:
1. Name
2.
Occupation/Job Title/Worksite
3. e-mail address
Example:
Jo Booksworth,
Librarian
Best Elementary,
Bestville, CA
JBOOKSWORTH@BEST.K12.CA.US
If you do not know how to automate this procedure, you may want to ask your network manager if there is an automatic way of including a signature file in your messages. Most are able to do so. There have been many posts explaining how to create signature files. Search the archives for the instructions for your particular browser.
