Johanna & all,
I get occasional questions from concerned members who've been contacted by
vendors offlist in response to something they posted to the group. While
we do have a policy restricting vendors from posting to the list, there is
no official policy, nor would we have much ability to enforce a policy,
restricting offlist contact. As all LM_NET messages are publicly available
through the archives, vendors do not even need to be officially subscribed
to LM_NET in order to read our posts. I too have been contacted offlist by
vendors. The first time, I was startled, but the post I received from the
vendor contained exactly the information I needed in response to a question
I posted to the group. For those vendors whose information is not so
useful, simply make use of the almighty delete key.
While vendor contacts offlist in response to information requested by the
member may be appropriate, if we found an officially-subscribed vendor
making "cold call" emails without any warrant, we would take any steps
possible to end such contact, but again, vendors do not need to be
subscribed to access our list. I have never heard of any "cold call"
contacts as a result of being a member of LM_NET. All members I've heard
from were contacted because they asked for information the vendor thought
he/she could provide, or the member was discussing a specific product, and
the vendor wanted to correct or provide additional information.
If Johanna, you're receiving random advertising and are certain this is a
result of your LM_NET affiliation, please contact me offlist with additional
information, and if there's anything we can do to assist, we'll certainly do
what we can. Keep in mind, many vendors gain access to emails through other
avenues: purchases you make, catalogs you receive, information shared at
conference exhibit booths, etc. So we would need some clear indication they
were contacting you because of LM_NET, and they would also need to be
subscribed for us to take any official action.
Also keep in mind that if you also subscribe to our El-Announce list, you
will receive a few emails each week from our affiliated school library
vendors. Be assured that if you are subscribed to El-Announce, vendor
messages are sent to an El-Announce address (just like your posts are sent
to an LM_NET address), and our list automatically forwards them on to
subscribed members. The vendors do not have a list or specific information
of any of our El-Announce members. We do not share our subscriber lists
with outside sources.
