My original post:
Hello all. I am going to need some recertification hours soon. I
would
love to take an outstanding YA lit class on line. Has anyone had such
a
class that you could recommend to me? Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

The reponses I received are listed below. I did some checking last
night and I fell -in love- with the courses offered through the Rutgers
Professional Development program. However, (in my humble opinion) they
are quite pricey. I have no doubt that it is well worth the money,
given the outstanding course descriptions, but alas, I might need to go
with a cheaper alternative. Or perhaps I could post another target on
LM_NET for scholarship information!? Ha! Thanks to everyone who
responded.

University of Idaho had a good one a few years ago. I really enjoyed
it
AND learned a lot.

Hi Angela -- If they are just for recertification hours I have found
the center for professional development at Fresno Pacific University to
have excellent literature courses (I have taken almost all of them).
You just sign up, the materials are sent to you with a course outline,
and you work at your own pace -- then send in the materials when
finished. You will get three hours of graduate credit for each class.
Here is the link to their site --

I'm taking a YA lit class this summer through San Jose State
University with Shirley Lukenbill. I haven't looked at many of the
reviews, but there are several available on a SJSU SLIS Yahoo group I
belong to. If you decide you're interested in the course and would
like review information, I can forward you some of the comments.

I work with what is called an Intermediate Unit, a support service of
the PA Dept of Ed. The PA Dept of Ed (PDE) issues graduate credit for
the course. I can determine how many credits I want the course to be
when I propose the course, and that depends on workload of course.
In PA, these credits carry full graduate weight and can be applied
toward a Masters Equivalency. You will want to check with your school
district to be sure that your state accepts our credits. In my previous
classes (different topics), I had students from San Fran to Nebraska to
DC.

I took a lit class last summer through UNK. I had to take a
combination
childrens/YA, but if I remember right, a person can take that class any
way
needed. There¹s no way better to take a class than on line!

The University of Wisconsin-Stout has an online YA lit course starting
in June:
Young Adult Literature in the Reading Program (grades 6-12)

motivate life-long readers, and encourage critical thinking across the
curriculum. Topics include the nature of teenage readers and genres of
young adult literature in the classroom curriculum.

I am in an MLS program now and have been doing the whole thing online.
I
took the YA lit class (ILS512 Materials for Adolescents) and enjoyed
it.

I have taken some 27 YA lit courses through Rutgers Professional
Development. They offer a fifteen credit certificate and I took twelve
beyond it b/c the classes were so good. This summer's offering is Man of
Advantage: boys and reading. I took it a few summers ago (the courses
cycle every three or so years) and it was excellent.
I am also looking at Penn State World College. They offer a full
masters of education in children's literature totally online.

An Educator's Survey of Young Adult Literature 17:611:549 3 credits
This survey course of young adult literature (books for teenagers) is
designed especially for teachers, school media specialists, and other
educators. The focus is on contemporary books aimed at readers ages
12-18. The course provides the opportunity to explore this rich
literature and to create lesson plans, booktalks, webquests, and other
material useful in the school library or classroom. The emphasis is on
reading widely and on intense engagement with the texts. Students will
read thirty to forty titles in the course of the semester. class runs
June 23rd to August 13th. Instructor: GraceAnne DeCandido.

or
Man of Advantage: Books and Boys in the Middle and High School Years 3
credits
Mark Twain famously said that "the man who does not read good books
has no advantage over the man who can't read them." In this course we
will consider the reading interests of boys and young men aged ten to
eighteen, develop criteria for evaluating books for this audience, and
explore the challenges unique to maintaining their interests in
literature. We will examine the voices of boys and men who have told
their own stories and consider books of particular interest to middle
and high school males. This course is a seminar; there will be heavy
emphasis on reading and discussions. class runs May 27th to July 22nd.

I am working on my MLS at East Carolina University in North Carolina.
I have taken a Children's and YA Lit course from Dr. Ruth Cox Clark. I
believe ECU is offering a YA Lit course to be taught by Dr. Clark during
summer semester. She is a wonderful teacher and I plan on taking this
course during the Fall semester. I highly recommend any class taught by
Dr. Clark. She does alot of conferences/writing/research in the field
of YA Lit.
