Hello Colleagues,
A few 2007 titles got past me that I wanted to be
sure to recommend as you put together summer
orders. One Thousand Tracings is one that every
library should own, as I am sure very many of you
already do! Forgive my tardiness.
One Thousand Tracings: Healing the Wounds of
World War II by Lita Judge. (Hyperion, 2007). ISBN: 978-1423100089
Winner of numerous awards and distinctions,
including both the 2008 IRA Children’s Book Award
and a 2008 Jane Addams Children’s Book Award
Honor, One Thousand Tracings is an essential
addition to every elementary and middle school
library and every public library children’s room.
Seated in the author’s family history, this book
is a story of deep generosity in the face of
near-hopeless need. After the end of World War
II, from 1946-1948, Judge’s grandmother and her
family were involved in a massive effort to send
food, supplies, and most of all, footwear to
hundreds of survivors of the war-wrought
devastation in Europe. The effort, however
enormous, was begun by and continued by
individuals and their families whose hearts ached
for strangers in need. The essential message of
this deeply affecting book is that one person,
one family, CAN make a difference. As we
continue to walk through hard economic times in
our own country, the time is perfect to share
this message with children and to invite them to
share what they have with children in families
more needy than their own. Judge’s own
illustrationsfull page watercolor paintings, as
well as collages of black-and-white photos,
newspaper clippings, and foot tracingsenhance
the emotional effect of this outstanding book. A
website that includes letters, biographical
sketches, a timeline, and activities add value to
this ESSENTIAL purchase.
