I'm also a librarian in a Jewish school (girls).  
 
I have a number of favorites, but these stand out:
 
Dorris, Michael.  Morning Girl (4) (Indians at the time of the arrival of the first 
Europeans) and Sees Behind Trees. (4-5) (a visually impaired Native American boy's 
efforts to find his place)
Karr, Kathleen.  The Great Turkey Walk. (5) (A teenage boy leads a turkey drive to 
Colorado in this humorous story based on real events)
Park, Linda Sue.  The Kite Fighters. (5) (An excellent story about a boy living in 
15th-century Korea)
Speare, Elizabeth George.  The Sign of the Beaver. (5) (The friendship between a 
white and Native American boy in colonial Maine)
Yep, Laurence.  When the Circus Came to Town. (4-5) (An outgoing girl becomes a 
recluse when her face is scarred following an illness until unusual visitors draw 
her out of her shell.)
