I truly believe if you have the time you need to register for the entire
conference. There are events, socials, talks, sessions, meals with vendors, and so
much more available to you with full registration.
If you only had half a day to spend in the exhibits, then an exhibit pass would
probably meet your needs. Take a look at the program from the vision that you are
not just a school librarian, but also a youth services librarian and
a generalist. There are often interesting president programs and more to attend.
There are award receptions you can attend and even some you can slip into after
meals to listen to speeches for free. I like the reception for the Henry Bergh
ASPCA awards myself.
I can powerhouse through the exhibit hall, but I've found many vendors offer
different incentives each day - including advance reading copies of books.
I will use my time in the exhibits differently each day for example I might race
around:
getting an overview of the entire floor
visiting specific vendors to ask questions
grabbing up as many free books as I can
rolling up posters
spending in-depth time with editors and publishers to see which new titles are
their favorites
waiting in line for autographs by authors (and to get my picture taken with them to
show my students)
filling up on mini-Snickers and other treats since I am probably missing a meal
The AASL conference is wonderful for sessions for school librarians, but the total
experience of ALA is broadening professionally. You can also see governance
activities, drop by the All-Committee room and sit in on some of the committees to
see if you want to be involved, and take the time to explore the wonder of being a
member of the ALA.
