When I was a H.S. Librarian, when a parent wanted to check out a book, I always
accomodated them, by checking their choices out in their child's name. The system
we had was time intensive to check out books to someone who wasn't already in
the automated system... i.e. students and employees. Therefore, I had the
option to check items out in their student's name or keep a separate by hand
system... a separate system... no way. It worked very well. I don't think this is
the time to think about the child's responsibility... the PR it generates for you
with parents far out weighs the "child's responsibility" issue. Most likely you
never get another chance for the PR aspect with that parent. I remember one parent
who came in with a chip on her shoulder and left as a complete library fan because
I suggested she check out the book that had caught her interest. Her response...
"YOU'LL LET ME do that?" [Big Smile]

I have checked out to parents for many years. It's an "unadvertised
service" in my library. I don't go around telling everyone and it
isn't an official policy. However, when a parent asks I am always happy to
accomodate. I have never had trouble getting books back from the parents and
they check out books for many different reasons. It is good PR and works well
for me.

Subject: Parents check out books
Our school will begin checking out books to parents in our PreK-8 school
library. We have a parent shelf, also. Kindergarden students must return
their book before checking out another book. Has anyone experienced a parent
checking out books because their child forgot to return their book? I am
concerned about the child's responsibility for returning the book.
Thank you
