The internet archive has "backed up" the internet for almost a decade. You can look
at the progress of web-sites just by typing in the URL you're interested in.

The world wide web wasn't introduced until around 1993.
Everything was text based up until that point, and the general public
did not have access to the internet. It was basically the government,
and higher ed. Some K-12 teachers had accounts through colleges, and
they had access to text based gopher sites, and listservs. You might
try the wayback machine, for old archived sites.
