Hooray for Reading Day! by Margery Cuyler, illustrated by Arthur
Howard. Simon & Schuster, 2008. 978-0-689-86188-8
Hooray for a book about Reader's Theater! Jessica, star of Stop Drop
and Roll and 100th Day Worries, returns in this picture book about a
freckle-faced worry wort who stumbles and trips as she tries to read
in first grade. Her rude classmates laugh at her wayward attempts
even though Mr. Martin corrects their ill behavior while continually
bolstering Jessica's courage. But when Mr. Martin announces a
"Reading Theater" day with parents in attendance and instructs
students to practice their lines and come in costume, Jessica just
knows she's sunk. Luckily, though, her worries lead her to the best
solutions, a frank talk with her family (where she learns her mom was
once a struggling reader too) and an audience-her dog Wiggles-who
will listen uncritically as she practices and
practices. Furthermore, the audience that Reader's Theater provides
does just what research shows it will do-gives Jessica a purpose for
reading fluently and successfully. Howard's watercolor illustrations
emphasize Jessica's emotional journey and bring added humor to this
realistic and much-needed story. Suggested grades K-3.
