Fanny by Holly Hobbie. Little, Brown, 2008. 978-0-316-16687-4
Moving on from her long-running Toot and Puddle series, veteran
author/illustrator Holly Hobbie brings us a new character with a
problem quite common for little girls. Fanny's mother just doesn't
understand. ALL girls, even her two best friends Tiffany and Coco,
have a Connie doll (think of a Barbie/Bratz combo on steroids) but
Fanny's mom says, "I just don't like the way Connie dolls
look. They're just too . . .much!" After a serious temper tantrum,
the charmingly bespectacled Fanny hatches a plan. She sews her own
Connie doll and names her Annabelle. Predictably, Annabelle is not
really in the Connie league, being rather too puffy and sweet, and
Tiffany and Coco ignore her completely. However, when Fanny puts her
new sewing machine and fabric to use to make Annabelle clothes and
her own doll, Annabelle wins a permanent place in Fanny's heart.
Hobbie captures both the frustration and creative determination in
her character with winsome illustrations that will draw in readers,
particularly girls who will benefit from the valuable message.
Suggested ages:4-7.
