[LM_NET] Copyright and Typefaces

I just watched the movie "Helvetica."  I know.. why would they make a
movie about a a type face.. that is why I watched it after the college
I work at purchased it and I had to catalog it.  It was mentioned in
the movie that Linotype owns Helvetica.  My question is, is a font
copyrighted?   Do they get royalties in some applications?

By the way the movie was not bad if you are at all interested in graphic design.
