I was in this situation once. Here's what I did & it worked out well.
I would divide the money into a 50/50 split between fiction and nonfiction.
For fiction
Pull, at random, some popular genre titles in Fantasy, romance, Sci-fi, survival,
sports stories, coming of age, etc--just 2-3 for each type.
Check the circ stats. See what is more popular in your school--what the kids are
reading--and buy accordingly. Series are important--like the Spiderwick ones, what
with the movie being out--if you don't have 'em, you need 'em.
Is your school culturally diverse? There's a great series of African-American
books called the Bluford Series--Middle school kids love it and if you buy direct
from Townsend Press, they're only a buck a book.
For nonfiction, allot 100 bucks to each dewey area. Make a list of each book you
buy and give it to the content teachers, (ex: give the 500's to your science and
math teachers, the 300's and 900's to your social studies teachers, and so on)
If you don't need $100 bucks worth of books in one Dewey area, pick up a few
professional resources for the teacher's professional collection (if there is one)
or bump the money back to fiction.
