Dear LM-Netters,
In my district, our schools are in the configuration of K-4, 5/6, 7/8, and
9-12. Our elementary librarians would like to see students' lost book fees
follow students as they change schools, in the hope that we can reinforce
responsibility and still try to collect either the book or the money. Our
secondary teachers see incoming new students with fines on their records as
too much work and want us to forgive the fines. Our high school librarians
don't want to deal with book fines because it will cause a hold to be placed
on graduating seniors' caps and gowns. How do other districts handle this?
We elementary librarians see that lost books really bite into our already
minuscule budgets; secondary budgets are bigger. We also feel strongly
about the issue of responsibility for items checked out.
Thanks for any insight you can give!
