Greetings!
I apologize for the whirlwind first post, but I was introduced to this
resource a few years ago as a student and would like now to plumb the depths
of knowledge and experience as a new librarian. : )
Briefly, I am creating (from scratch!) a library media center for the
alternative school where I currently work, starting with the high school
program. I was able to secure a very small amount of money through Title
funds for books, but I have to get my list in ASAP. I have some money to
play with that I would like to use to support the Lit teacher's planned
curriculum for next year: American Lit, centering around slavery issues and
community. I've come up with the standards - Roll of Thunder, Color Purple,
etc. - but would love some other suggestions.
Our students are considered "high risk," with many coming from situation
with a host of issues like drug/alcohol abuse, teen pregnancy, low
income/poverty, learning difficulties, authority issues, etc. We have a
range of reading abilities, but most are to the low end.
Thanks in advance!
