We had a very successful book fair each year at the elementary school where I used
to work. I used the titles for book talks and followed this up with lessons about
being a consumer and making purchasing decisions. We also got into mental math by
talking about where to find the purchase price on the book or display, rounding up
to the nearest dollar, estimating sales tax, subtracting this amount from your
budget, etc.
Say what you will about Scholastic, for a lot of the kids in my district whose
parents don't go to libraries or book stores, they get popular, current books into
kids' hand at a cheaper price than retail.

A very good teacher once told me that there are many types of "Teachable
Moments". A book Fair can be very instructional as well as fun - and fit in
with many points in the curriculum - independent reading selection and
appreciation, math, decision making, life skills, community services
(appreciation of what is needed to help the school).
If the objection is to the company- Scholastic- then perhaps that parent
can be asked to help find alternative for Scholastic that will help generate
the much needed money.
