[LM_NET] TAR: Do you know this book?

Hello, All knowing listserv,

My principal is looking for a book she loved when she was a kid. The book is about 
a boy who gets a puppy. The boy and puppy grow up together and then the dog dies at 
the end.  She thinks the cover had a picture of a man and the back of the dog. 
There might be "I love You" in the title and the author might have Wilhelm in it.  
It's a picture book.  Does this sound familiar to anyone?
