Long before I was in the district, 14 years now, the community was fed
up with all the fund raiser type things coming home with the kids to
sell magazines, gift wrap, cookie dough and everything in-between. The
community said, look we are paying for this anyway, how much does each
club make on an average from these events? They then added those
amounts to the levy and each club gets their money without the hassle.
Now, it isn't just a few in the community paying for all those things,
everybody has an equal share. Not much in the way of covering
inflation, but the cost of the things would have gone up too, so it
probably all comes out about the same.

Pictures at the secondary level are during the student
orientation/registration times before school starts. The elementary
kids do have to take time out of their day to get their pictures taken.
What with the movement to have all students with picture ID it has to be
done. It is always the option of the parents to buy pictures or not.
But, we need the pictures for ID purposes in a variety of places;
library being one of, it is important to get the pictures taken during
school times instead of relying on parents to remember to send a current
picture of their child to school.

Only grades k-7 hold book fairs. They are during conference week; the
students have very little "library time" to view the items. Then the
fair is open during the afternoons and one evening for the students to
come in with their parents, or NOT as the parents choose.

Although I doubt the monopoly issue would demand us to stop using
scholastic, I agree with the parent.

I also agree it is a pure waste of instructional time and would prefer
it be treated as an elective afterschool event.

The only reason we are forced to use book fairs or any fundraising
mechanism is because we as parents, teachers and a community refuse to
fund schools properly. A wide range of corporations (scholastic
included) benefit enormously from this fact.

I am disgusted with our children being used for corporate gain. I am
required to hold scholastic fairs but I am continually disgusted with
the junk they sell and the profit they make off of my lower middle
income students.
