The Newbery award winners have often been "problematic" in recent years for many
schools, parents, administrators, librarians, etc. We have only to look at last
year's winner to be reminded that a winning book title does not mean that the book
is "G" rated. If/when "Lucky" is made into a movie, and if it is true to the book,
it will earn its PG or PG 13 rating for language alone. This is not my opinion;
this is the FCC law and guidelines. Funny, as librarians we are not supposed to
censor books, but the FCC has permission to censor even words!
Now to the problem at hand, consider looking at Kate diCamilo's award winners, Tale
of Despereaux and Because of Winn-Dixie. Sigh . . . my favorite last year was a
proud, vain little bunny and his adventures. I can't wait to see who wins this year!

We have a 5th grade class reading this book and we have a parent who is upset
because of language in it. It has been quite a while since I have read the book
myself. Could someone suggest another book that we could substitute for this
Newbery winner that would not have the profanity in BRIDGE.
I'd appreciate answers off the list and, in advance, I thank you.Patrice Huckaby,
