Is this the one about the autistic boy? Or a child with special needs of some
sort? If so, my son read it in 10th grade.

This is why it is so important to use Purchase Orders for everything.
What I find interesting is that the principal was willing to order
something without seeing it first. I'm assuming that the
"personalization" is actually the school name, rather than the name of
the student. The price isn't too bad, but I think I'd be more inclined
to order if I got a sample bookmark first.
The sales lady said she would send a "blank" invoice so your principal
could put it on the 08-09 budget. That should have also raised a red
flag. I can understand a postdated invoice, but not a blank one. How in
the world would anyone know what was ordered with a blank invoice?
Finally, if this scam is to actually work, the school check has to get
to the scammer. It might be interesting to call the phone number and ask
for the sales lady. I'm guessing that if your principal had actually
ordered the bookmarks that the invoice would have had another address
for the check.

Subject: Appreciation
Regarding the moving of books from 914-917 to 944-999, thank you for the great
feedback! Almost 30 sent affirmation that I was doing the right thing. A few said
they were thinking of doing this as well. I appreciate your quick response so
much.
By the way since several wrote me, the book donation leading to the Book Crossing
endeavor I wrote about recently is going well. Hundreds of books have come in and
we will start dispensing them on Monday. The newspaper is actually doing an
article on this - it never hurts to have community support with bringing literacy
to the world. Smiles.

Subject: TAR: MARC records
Oh wise ones,
My district has just moved to a union catalog and I am now being more
careful with my cataloging. I'm currently fixing some records that "were
lacking." I'm getting confused by the difference between the x and v
subfields on subject records (650). It seems that on older titles
everything was an x, now both are used. I think I understand that v is a
form such as poetry or drama. But I keep seeing fiction as both. Is the
v subfield for form a new edition? And the larger question, does it
really make a difference?

Subject: Looking for old materials
I've had a teacher ask for some materials that are no longer currently
available. She would like to supplement what she is currently using with
some "tried and true" resources she had at a previous school.
Does anyone out there have the America at School curriculum? This was
published by Pleasant Company and went with the American Girl stories (Meet
Felicity, Meet Samantha, etc.) I'm also looking for any of those old sets
you could purchase with your bookfair money from Scholastic that had the
book, the video, and the doll from the different time periods.
If you have any of these things gathering dust in your backroom, let me know
off-list. If it is in keeping with your discard policy, I will look into
purchasing them from you.

Subject: Picture books
Hello Collective Brain!
=20
I need some help. =20
=20
I have a high school Spanish teacher who is looking to break out of a
rut in her lesson plans. She has some beautiful Spanish language
picture books that she would like to use in her class. She wants her
students to get into groups, read them, and then take the characters and
pictures to create a new story. I think she wants to focus on
transitions in picture books. She wants to give them some background
knowledge on picture books prior to beginning the lesson. I think she
was hoping for a formula that would magically explain how to write one.
I suggested that her students might attempt to evaluate the books
themselves: evaluate sentence structure, audience, word choice,
transition words, structure of the story, quantity of text vs. the
complexity of the picture. I didn't get into use of color because I
don't think they will be drawing the book, just writing a new story. Is
there anything else I might include, oh Brain? I'd like to make this
collaborative effort a good one.
=20
Thanks for your help in advance.
