Christe, show them your web site for your school and library. Then show
them one that is accessible 24 hours a day, from any computer, thanks to
a web based program (Destiny).

Go to the Hays CISD web site, choose HCISD Libraries & click on some of
the Campus LMS library links to see the variety of things you can do
with a little more expertise & creativity. I think they'll be amazed.

http://teacherweb.hayscisd.net/web/library/campus.html
<http://teacherweb.hayscisd.net/web/library/campus.html>

Click on Buda, Chapa and Hays HS just to give them an example of the
possibilities for access to resources like Teachingbooks, the k-12
databases, other public library links,...students can looks at their own
account status, they ability to place holds, and even the youngest can
use the catalog with the visual search! Look at some of the added links
we've included in each school's Destiny home page, many specific to a
teachers or a courses,,,,& lots more!

Once they understand the power of taking the library to the students
homes, letting the parents use the resources too plus the savings your
district will have by the ease of interlibrary loan, it begins to make
sense financially and practically.

I did the same thing a couple of months ago. We now have Destiny from
CircPlus and we're still working on learning the product but really, it
is a dream. Good luck. Here is a powerpoint that we used, and my speech.
I hope it will be useful to get you started. (I attached this power
point and presentation, but i am not sure it will attach email me and i
will try to send it to you directly if you are interested.)

We have Destiny for all of our 300 schools! We love it. The students
love it. We purchased most of the "bells and whistles"--TitlePeek,
WebPath Express, State Standard Search, Textbook Manager, and of course,
Alliance+. In our very large district, the first benefit is that
materials from our libraries and textbooks are recoverable, no matter
what schools the students go to. So, number 1 is accountability.

Number 2 is shared resources. It is so easy to see which schools have
what when you have something special going on, or are looking for ideas
for collection development. Everyone has equal access.

Number 3 is the ability to use Web Path Express to do controlled,
curriculum-driven web searches. Students get websites that have been
examined for content and age-appropriateness.

If you are planning to purchase Textbook Manager, the most important
thing the board would be interested in here is accountability!! But you
can also do textbook forecasting, and have a statistical record of
losses and value.

We are in a budget-crunch right now, but plan to add Asset Manager as
soon as we can which will be for our AV/computer equipment, hopefully in
a year.

Just my two cents as obviously you know your school board the best, but
I wouldn't try to sell them on the services Destiny has for you as a
library media professional, but rather take it from an angle of what the
system will do for students, teachers, and parents. It also depends on
what additional features you are trying to get as well, but off the top
of my head, some suggestions might be.

Destiny will provide a web-based platform so that students can access
our catalog at school and at home. They will be able to see what items
our LMC has and in turn come in the next morning to get them off the
shelf.

Destiny will provide a database of website (if you get WebPath Express)
that provide preselected websites to help guide students when research.

Destiny will allow all of our campus to easily search for materials and
ILL between the various buildings.

Destiny will allow faculty to have access to our collections 24/7 to
search for resources to support their instruction no matter when and
where they are planning.

Destiny will allow our patrons to comment on the books they are reading
and write recommendations for other students.

Destiny will provide a smooth and quick check out time for students,
giving them the opportunity to get back to class or back to a project
quickly.

Destiny will allow faculty to search for resources based on state
standards (if you buy that add-on piece).

I'm sure if I had a few more minutes I might be able to come up with
more, but my experience is always to connect it to students, to
learning, to school improvement, and that helps to take a project much
faster down the road.

Hope this helps! :)

We've been on this a year. I'd point out the 24/7 webcat access,
interlibrary loan for resource sharing, the ability to build
bibliographies, teachers can create pubic lists of books that their
students can so easily check out. Add WebPath Express for peer reviewed
websites that are coded by grade level--links that are not ever
inappropriate nor links that are dead links, webcat is available in
Spanish and French. A customizable campus library home page is available
so that you can add links to your online databases. The last upgrade
allows student reives of books to be posted.

Students can log in and make their own bibliographies. It's easy to use.

Buy Title Peek and the book jackets give a nice visual aspect to the
catalog with journal reviews attached. It also has a visual search for
students that are early age or non native speakers of English. The
categories features allows the librarian to create customized book list
searches for example, holidays, Ms. Smith's medieval research unit, etc.
If Destiny goes down, you can still check in and out with Destiny
remote.

Far and away the BEST part is access. We can now access our library
catalog anywhere, anytime. When you do this presentation it would be
terrific if you could access someone else's Destiny catalog. Take a
wireless laptop to your presentation.

I have teachers come to me with a list in hand ready to collect books
that they found last night when they had an inspirational idea. I have
teachers who search the district and ask me to gather books for them.
BEST of all I have students who come to me asking for books they found
online with their parents. I personally love the ease of checking out
books ANYWHERE!!! When the circ desk line gets too long I just grab a
few students at the end of the line and say, "Come over here, and I'll
check out your books." They are amazed and I realize that they view the
Circ Desk as a type of shrine. It's kind of funny.

Good luck. And, yes Cataloging itself is much easier now that we have
Destiny. It was the best move our libraries made since automation.

Probably the best selling point in my opinion is that it is web based.
You can work on it from anywhere in the world if you have an internet
connection. Kids can check the catalog from home, reserve books, etc
from home. One more case of a library without walls!!!!
