LM_NET Archive

Hello to Everyone,
Since Alpha-KidZ Company is based in my hometown of West Monroe, Louisiana, I
notified Cindy Foust, author of the Alpha-KidZ series of alphabet books, about the
initial post and discussion on lm_net. I, personally, along with probably many of
you, have no idea as to how books are selected for inclusion in the AR program, but
was glad to see the effort being made to include this series in the AR test list.
After being an elementary librarian for 16 years, I would love to have this series
in my library collection. I was always looking for a good set of alphabet books.
Cindy responsed to my query and agreed to let me post her response for all of you
to read -

Thank you for your concern regarding my company?s request to be accepted on the
Accelerated Reader list. In an effort to alleviate any concerns regarding our
method for placement, please know that the Educational Director for Alpha-kidZ
contacted Renaissance Learning (distributor of the Accelerated Reader program)
directly and was advised that an acceptable way to get your books on the test list
involves getting as many requests/referrals from teachers and librarians as
possible. Quite simply, Renaissance will give closer attention to those books with
the most requests. Therefore, as a Louisiana publisher, with an alphabet-based
children?s book series, it seemed logical to our curriculum team to organize a
grassroots effort in the region that I live, work and educate my own children. If
I can be of any further assistance, please feel free to contact me at
cindy@alphakidz.com. Thank you.

I don't know for sure, but after reading the response from Renaissance Learning, I
suspect that the big publishing companies probably have their own campaigns to get
their books included on the AR test list. Personally I don't see a problem with
this. When I was at a school using Accelerated Reader, I selected AR tests for the
best books for my school's reading program. If I thought a series was not suitable,
I didn't include it.

I hope that if you are not familiar with this alphabet series, you will visit the
company's web site at alphakidz.com to take a look at some of the books. (I am not
affiliated with the company in any way and am not trying to sell books.) I
consider them a great new addition to the alphabet book genre.
