Hi,
I'm sorry I missed the original posting. I began participating in overseas
travel experiences as a social studies teacher and have found them to be
even more rewarding to me in the library. Opportunities that are not
available to us will usually specifically say so and if they don't want
librarians. Just send an email for more information.
The Aramco Educators to Saudi Arabia Program is designed specifically for
media specialists and social studies teachers. Recent participants have
actually been able to visit public libraries and this is such an awesome and
opportunity for Americans (especially women)! All of the NEH workshops,
seminars and institutes offer wonderful opportunities. While you can hit an
occasional bad apple, you will learning from leading experts, have wonderful
access to primary research sources and will work with highly motivated and
motivating colleagues. While they are all truly wonderful, I really have to
make mention of the Landmark workshop at Pearl Harbor. Daniel Martinez is a
leading expert on the subject and works hard to share his knowledge. I
participated with teachers from Japan, met Pearl Harbor survivors and again
had wonderful access. As a media specialist, you will be seen a quite an
asset to the program.
All Fulbright programs are wonderful! Most are no longer taking
applications, but a few may still be available through local universities.
There are many, many possibilities out there so go for it! Anything that
provides you with an opportunity to learn makes you better at what you do.
I am currently participating in a Teachers to Taiwan program offered by the
Indiana state department of Education. I'm here teaching English to 3rd-6th
graders but I use my specialty by providing resources to other teachers from
the US who have little expertise with technology. I am able to infuse
technology into my classes and inspire local teachers and I'm developing a
new perspective on teaching while I learn about Taiwanese culture. I''ve
also learned about the dismal state of school libraries here. Michigan,
Ohio and Arkansas have similar programs.
Never pass up on an opportunity!
