Me again. Has anyone do more than demonstrate good book care at the
beginning of the year? I read on one post sometime back that someone
told the kindergarteners that when they learned to turn the pages at
the corners (instead of close to the gutter) they could start taking
out books. I'm also trying to get the kids not to open books when
standing or walking. Especially with the big books that start
separating at the spine.
What I'd really like to know is if you have insisted on certain ways
of handling books. How did you introduce it and how to do you make
sure kids continue to do it the right way? Are there consequences
for things like picking up a book by its front cover? I certainly
don't want to sit down on them hard enough to make them too wary to
enjoy the books.
I hear my teachers lamenting about the way the kids handle books. I
think I'll have to get it started right at the beginning of next
year. Trying to do it now is a bit like closing the barn door after
the horses got out. Running around trying to get them back in the
barn. All seven hundred of them.
thanks again,
Johanna
