Colleagues,

I was delighted to read the post by Dr. Mariana
Whitmer, Univ. of Pittsburgh concerning the Nat.
Endowment for the Humanities seminar titled Teaching
American History Through Song, and not just because
I'm a musician. That a fellow librarian attended this
seminar and loved it says volumes.

I was an NEH Scholar twice attending Emory U,
Atlanta's seminar in 1994 dealing with Swift & Twain:
Comparative Satire and in 1997 @ Duke U dealing with
Civil Society in the 16th Century: Erasmus, Luther &
More. As a former Teacher-Librarian for the U.S.
Dept. of Defense Dependents Schools in Canada/Japan,
I've seen fraud, waste and abuse on a monumental
scale. And I can tell you without reservation, that
these NEH seminars/institutes are THE best use of tax
funds I've ever encountered. The Directors are all
world class scholars/practitioners; the fellow
attendees are the best of the best, and everyone
really wants to learn. It's a true Peak Gardner
experience, totally inspiring.

I've met some of the most competent, intelligent,
exhilerating teachers at these events. This summer's
offerings are available at http://www.neh.gov. I
think the deadline may be Mar. 1st. The competition
is often fierce but if the substantive content
interests you, give it a shot.
