The first question (below) is easy: If a teacher requests a book that I
don't believe follows the selection policy, I'd help the teacher find a
vendor where she could purchase the book cheaply and explain how to
submit it to the Approved Supplemental Materials Committee so she can
use it in her classroom.

The other question is more nuanced, but really not difficult either. I
wouldn't presume to remove a book from the collection without going
through the challenge policy. If necessary, I might explain to a parent
or administrator that I didn't personally select the item in question
and so couldn't speak directly to its qualifications. But the challenge
policy exists for a reason. I would be happy to do some research and
make recommendations to the committee if asked.

I would add that I don't think books really enter the collection until
they're added to the catalog and put on display. I have been in
situations where, as Carol Simpson alludes, I have felt betrayed by
brief reviews. In rare instances, I do take a much closer look at books
after they've already been purchased and determine not to keep them. In
that case, I make them available to the high school libraries. This is
not censorship. Once the book is made available to the public, however,
it stays.

I am really enjoying this discussion, although I am unnerved by the
willingness of some to censor what they deem inappropriate. I can't
help but think that as Americans we are losing ground...

That said, I do believe that following your districts selection policy
is the way to go - But, I am curious about what you all do if:

1. A teacher requests a book that doesn't follow the selection policy?

2. You have inherited your collection from previous librarians and you
are not sure if the books follow your district's policy?
