I am one of those rare birds who also has a BS in library degree. I loved the
experience and believe it was a better program than my MLS. That being said, ALA
does not accredit undergraduate library degress - and, yes they still exist.I
believe - and have always taught in Graduate School Library programs that your
undergraduate degree can be in any discipline - depends what kind of librarian you
wish to be. After I decided to be a Catholic school librarian, I went and got a 3rd
Masters - this time in Theology. So much depends where you are, where you want to
be, and who you want to be.It's all good.AllanDr. Allan O'Grady Cuseo, MGCDirector

Re: Target: N.Y.S. librarian graduate school questionDear Fellow New York State
librarians,

I have had a few students ask me how they can become a librarian. Being a school
librarian is a second career for me and I was accepted into graduate school with an
undergraduate degree in Anthropology. I can't imagine this was the best route.

What is the recommended educational path to follow? (Do undergraduate degrees in
Library Science even exist any more?) What kind of background did you have going
into grad school and how well did it prepare you for your career?

Thank you for your help.
