I'm sharing this with the list because I think "everyone" needs to
start actively collecting this type of data to share with
administrators, school boards, parents, teachers, and every
stakeholder within the community.
You may want to investigate Dr. Violet Harada's work which deals with
how we, as librarians, need to begin assessing our students' work.
Here is a link to an article that relates to what I think you are
asking:

One of my favorite books by Dr. Harada is "Assessing Learning" which
is available through Amazon or Libraries Unlimited. The book does not
dictate that we assess and assign grades, but rather that we
pre-assess to determine what our students already know and what areas
need to be addressed, document the students' areas of weakness, teach
those skills needed, and re-assess to determine outcomes. If we
compare our students' knowledge of a specific library-related activity
before we instruct and then teach our students the skill, evaluate
their progress (informally but through assessment portfolios, files,
etc.) and then compare their achievement / growth because of our
instruction of specific content directly related to areas of weakness,
we can then show how we have impacted student achievement through the
lessons that we teach in the library.
If you find that this IS what you're interested in, please note that
Dr. Harada will be at AASL in Reno, Nevada (in October)---obviously
with limited seating! She will be speaking on Wednesday. Here's the
link to the program:
http://www.ala.org/ala/aasl/conferencesandevents/national/AASL_Reno2007_PrelimProgram.pdf
I won't be able to attend but I am anxiously waiting for another
opportunity to see her. I think she has definitely "hit" on the
target that will help librarians show the impact that we make on
student achievement (and the value of libraries and librarians within
the school curriculum!)
