For years, my family and I have been in the progress of visiting
every county (or equivalent) in the United States. The idea behind
this can be summed up in this way: Someday, take a flight to Las
Vegas and rent a car. Drive across Hoover dam and you will have been
to Arizona. Now really, the only thing you will have seen is the
other side of Lake Mead, but you can mark Arizona of as having been
visited. You will have missed out on the Grand Canyon, Phoenix,
giant cacti, the Petrified Forest, Tucson, Tombstone, the Painted
desert... On the other hand, if you visit all fifteen counties in
the state, you are almost bound to see something of Arizona.
This summer saw us exploring Georgia and Florida, as well as
finishing off all the remaining counties in North Carolina, South
Carolina and Tennessee. I have completed 40 states, my wife is up to
38, and my fifteen year old son has finished 37. He has been to
2,906 of 3,141 and has visited 221 national park sites. Curt is on
pace to finish prior to his twentieth birthday.
For those who might be interested in sharing this particular form of
lunacy, I recommend a visit to a couple of sites. There is a club
for county collectors called the Extra Miler Club, which meets
annually during June or July in a different location. This year's
meeting was in Huntsville, Alabama, while next year will see us in
Salt Lake City, Utah. There is a $12 annual membership fee, which
pays for the cost of the quarterly newsletter. Visits to the EMC home
on the net are free! The web address is:
http://www.extramilerclub.org/
The other site allows you to record, on-line, those counties you have
visited. It is free to join and can be found at:
http://www.mob-rule.com/counties/
The hobby allows one to collect something with out the need for
dusting or storage...
