I've been pondering this, too. I have the series on my shelves at the high school
level and I've pointed them out to students who like the genre and love books in a
series, but what I noticed about them (before the controversy came up) is that
while the Golden Compass has been checked out a few times, the students don't
follow through with the rest of the series.
Since the first of the series is said to be the least controversial, I think a lot
of the complete story may not always be getting read.
Regarding the uproar over the movie, I think the timing is one of the things
bothering Christian parents and groups. December traditionally is the month when
there are movies that celebrate Christmas and/or that have families with young
children as their target audience. The movie posters and trailers may make this
seem like it's going to be appropriate for the same audience who are expecting the
traditional Christmas season family movie, and it's obviously not going to be a
movie that fits that specific expectation.

books or the message you may have gleaned from them, what do you guys
think about the fact that the uproar has begun only now that the movie
is coming? These books are not new. Were people just unaware of
them? Pullman did win major prizes for these books. Do conservative
religious groups feel like they have to take a stand b/c movies get
more publicity?
I'd love to hear what people think.
