Good morning,
Earlier this week, a reader of my blog/resource
"American Indians in Children's Literature" wrote
to ask me about a new book for the Christmas
season, that includes several illustrations of
kachinas. As I learned more about the book,
I saw how far over the cultural respect line the
author/illustrator/publisher had stepped. Details
are on my blog/resource. To get to it, go to my
webpage at the University of Illinois
(http://www.nah.uiuc.edu/faculty-Reese.htm)
and click on "Web Page". (Are you wondering
why I'm directing you via my UIUC page? Some
servers reject mail with blog addresses in them
because they could be spam.)
Have a good week, and please share this email
with others who work with children and books.
Debbie

The word "squaw" in SIGN OF THE BEAVER
---Should actually read "in historical fiction" because
that word is incorrectly used in a lot of children's
historical fiction...

Documentary: Way of the Warrior
---History teachers! You must view this and record
it for use in your classrooms. It is about American
Indians in the US armed forces.

Elementary School Lesson Plans on American Indians
---An excellent resource for early childhood and
elementary school classrooms.

The Twelve Days of Christmas: A Pinata for the
Christmas Tree
---This is the book with kachinas in it.

Pueblo Indians and Missionaries
---The book with the kachinas reminded me of a
story my daughter wrote. Her story provides the
context necessary to understand why a Pueblo or
Hopi person is likely to object to the use of kachinas
in a book about a Christian holiday.
