I received many responses to my request for information regarding evaluating
library paraprofessionals. Here is the original request:
I am currently a student in Longwood University's Library Media program. I
am working on a assignment where I am creating a evaluation tool for a
library paraprofessional. I am curious as to how your school evaluates your
library aid/paraprofessional. Does your administration solicit your opinion
or do
you complete the evaluation yourself? Is it narrative or more of a
checklist? How often is he/she evaluated? Is there a job description for
your
paraprofessional that assists in his/her evaluation?
Generally, the responses were 50-50 in terms of who is doing the evaluation.
In half of the schools, the librarian was completing the evaluation. In
the other half, the administration completed the evaluation but only half of
those schools sought the advice of the librarian.
Most of the evaluations consisted of a checklist with a small narrative
section. Many of the evaluations were not specific to a library paraprofessional
but more for any paraprofessional in the building.
All but one responder stated that the evaluation was done once a year. Not
all paraprofessionals are actually observed in their position.
The general impression is that librarians would like to have more input into
the evaluation but changes in administration have kept that from happening
in many school.
Thanks for your input. I can now put together one for my assignment.
