Although I wasn't able to attend AASL, I did receive some exciting
news with an AASL connection.

Two of my middle school science teachers and I applied for the
Heinemann-Raintree "Making the Non-fiction Connection" grant for
$5,000 of nonfiction books for our library. I learned that the grant
was awarded last evening at AASL by Heinemann-Raintree and I'm excited
and proud to say....WE WON!!

My science teachers are SO excited!! Our grant (which is entitled,
"Let's Talk About Me!") focuses on health, physical fitness, body
image, safety, substance abuse, and taking responsibility for "our
bodies and our futures"....which extends the science and health units
for these grade levels (6-8). We several projects planned and I'll
share some as we go along, but right now I think we are still
surrounded by excitement and shock!!

(And as you might imagine, since sharing the information with everyone
in the District, I've had requests from several other teachers who now
want to "collaborate" with me on grant ideas or projects for their
students!! What fun ahead!!)

I'm just excited that these two teachers were willing to step-out and
work with me so soon (especially since I am a new librarian to their
district). Their eagerness to work was definitely that of "early
adopters" within the realm of "teacher-librarian collaboration," but
their deep commitment to their students' futures was the true
inspiration!! Talk about a win-win-win situation! (See, Toni Buzzeo's
"Collaboration" ideas are alive and well within my "philosophy!")

Many THANKS to Heinemann-Raintree for their wonderful gift to our
middle school library!! We can't wait to get started!!!
