Today I was approached by a 4th grade teacher
regarding one of her students choice of reading
material. The student in question had been
institutionalized this past summer for emotional
issues. He has checked out one of the 'Scary Stories'
books & was copying some of the illustrations. She
said something along the lines of 'not giving him any
more ideas'.
The teachers (2 teachers-inclusion class) mentioned to
him that the book seems above his reading level & he
should choose something more appropriate to his
reading level. The teachers have discussed the 'just
right' book & I tell them about the '5 finger rule'.
During book selection, he choose another one of these
books. I *definitely* was not about to say you can't
check out this book.
I don't think it's my place to restrict the student,
but this situation does have me concerned. I am also
a relatively new SLMS & new to this (probationary)
position as of September so I'm still new to
navigating these sorts of issues. Has anyone dealt
with something similar?
Thanks.
