I am a new Media Specialist in a careful what you wish for situation. I
have just been given the blessing of the principal for a major overhaul to
the Media Center. The school serves grades 5-8 with approximately 440
students. I feel our electronic information needs are adequate but our book
selection in non-fiction is out dated and fiction there just is not
sufficient for the population. The concerns that need to be justified for
the updating are these:
Are the students checking out books? (General Collection)
Don't they just look things up through the databases/web? (Non-fiction)
I cannot direct these questions to a quick report of our catalogue
automation because teachers have never "checked out" books before and the
collection is not well catalogued. New software is part of the big plan;
technology seems to always get an okay without question. I am stumped by
having to justify buying books as part of the overhaul for a Media Center.
Please send advice, reports and good wishes - I am meeting with the
principal on Tuesday.
TIA
