Dear All,
We are a small (300 students) elementary school and thus have a fairly small
library. When a 3rd-grade teacher asks for "all the books on animals",
we're pretty well depleted if he takes everything, and I come off seeming
uncooperative and possessive if I suggest otherwise. I would like to put a
policy in place that corrects the problem.
Leaving aside for the moment questions of the kinds of research teachers
choose to do with their classes--I am as proactive and energetic as I
possibly can be, but we still often get "bird units"--I wonder what others
have set as policies for teachers laying claim to a fairly significant
portion of the library's resources for several weeks.
Putting the items on reserve for use in the library is something I often
suggest, but there's just that persistent subset of my colleagues who want
all the books in their classrooms for a month or more. They're the ones
who'll say, "If anybody needs this, just tell them to come to my room."
I think if I know how others in this group handle this problem, I'll be more
courageous about coming up with a solution. If it's anything that others
are interested in as well, I'll be happy to post a HIT.
Thanks so much!
