Rather than being the "sage on stage" who tells the students all about
the library, what we offer, the collection contents, the databases,
etc., I've used a wiki to allow the students to create their own
information about the library. I tell them that they will create an
information guide about the library that everyone will be able to use
throughout the year.

I set-up the wiki (I use PBwiki and give them the password) then I
give them the questions to answer / research and then they add the
content. They must research questions about the collection, the
databases, the programs being offered during the year, the library
hours of operation, the librarians, etc. It's like a combination of
"journalism and research" because they must interview people (the
librarians) to get some of the answers and they must investigate the
library and what we offer to be able to explain how to use the
library.

It allows the students the opportunity to work together (they create
groups to determine who will do what type of assignments to complete
the project) and they learn how wikis work. They also correct each
others' work (spelling, grammar, etc.). I noticed that they also
worked well to meet the deadlines and continued to answer one
another's questions about the library as the project continued.

I was able to work with the students during one period a week for
three weeks to give guidance---the rest of the time the students
worked independently to complete the project.
