Interesting--I've been thinking about this issue a lot
lately. I am working in a school that is 95% African
American male, mentally disturbed and academically
challenged. I am a Caucasian middle aged female.
Our collection is very heavy on Black history issues
and important African Americans. While I understand
the cultural importance of making sure they understand
their history and culture, I am concerned about the
insular nature of it all.
The vast majority of these boys live their lives
within a 3 block radius of their homes and have little
or no information about other cultures, areas or
situations. So my goal is to expand their vision a
bit in my collection development and planning for next
year.
