Hello LM NETTERS!

Our 8th grade History teacher just came back from a professional development
class linking geographical locations in a fictional work with the inclass
geography study. He was told to read as a class, Around the World in 80 Days
by Jules Verne. I looked at it first, not having read it in its entirety and
I am sure it will NOT sit well with today's students. The language is
awkward to today's ears and the kids would fall on the floor reading some of
the British phrases. I showed it to the teacher and he agreed it would not
work.
I tried on Novelist to find a similar title. The only suggestion was Dead
Reckoning (a fictional story about sailing with pirates -- not enough ports
of call for the teacher) I also looked at Dove, a nonfiction sailing
adventure by Robin ???? whose last name escapes me right now! He didn't want
that either, so I'm turning to LM NET to bail me out!
I need you to suggest a title that can be ordered in paperback (30 copies).
It should be fictional with many real ports of call to link to current
geographical units AND something that would appeal to 8th grade readers!
This teacher usually doesn't utilize the library much and I want to
encourage his use and dazzle him!! Please help me if you can.
Thank you!
