This concept isn't new. Books were transported much the same way by the WPA
in Tenn. and were taken by horseback into the rural population. "The Works
Progress Administration (WPA) was a relief measure established in 1935 by
executive order as the Works Progress Administration, and was redesigned in
1939 when it was transferred to the Federal Works Agency." The plan was
documented in a book on the history of libraries.

Subject: OT: A Good Fiction Read for Librarians
I got The Camel Bookmobile by Marsha Hamilton off our "new" shelves at the
public library. There
really is a camel bookmobile operating in Africa. The city public library
will send out a camel
bookmobile to out-lying tribes. The only restriction is that all the books
must be returned every
week and if they aren't, the bookmobile will never return to the tribe. (Can
you imagine???)
Some in the community embrace the idea and look forward to their books
every other week, while
others feel threatened and afraid of change to their time-honored
traditions.
I really enjoyed reading this book and felt like my horizons had been
expanded as I had no idea
such a bookmobile existed.
