Okay, I'm really against book rooms and the inherent wasting of funds as the books
disappear. But here's a thought -- go ahead and catalog them (with a clear
understanding that these books are NOT your responsibility) with some sort of
notation to their location. Inventory them in 1-2 years time and report the loss
rate with the $$$ amount included. THAT might get someone's attention! My current
library system (CASPR) has the ability to set up a separate library for just such
an eventuality, and so will whatever system is purchased to replace it.

We need to convince TPTB that we are the best buy for the money -- what we do well
is track our usage/circulation/statistics so why not use that to bring them back
from the dark side. IMHO of course!

quote

Okay, I look foolish for blowing the quote. I typed wrong, so here is my
retraction. The correct quote is as follows:

"Common Sense Economy: It's cheaper to buy a book for the library than it is to
buy one for each classroom."

This is an ongoing concern. I, too, see duplication that is not necessary. I also
worry about syphoning of funds. Will the library lose funds in favor of filling
"book rooms" and classroom libraries. I recently added the quote "It is cheaper to
buy one book for the library and one book for every classroom." We want students to
have access to good literature and the books they need and want to read. The
library AND the librarian are the best resources for this purpose. This week I wan
told that materials for teachers and leveled readers will be arriving. I will need
to catalog these materials, and that means they become my responsibility. However,
the first suggestion is to catalog them and then place them in the book room.
What?!?!? We all know things in the book room walk away and get lost. No, teachers
will not come all the way to the library just to check out those items. I see a
difficult, convoluted mess ahead. Thank goodness it is May, and the end of
school is 5/31. I'm going to be Scarlett O'Hara for now, I'll think about it next
August.

Wow! I was just in our "Book Room"-well-stocked, new titles, multiple
copies, book character dolls, books on tape, audio books.... Here I am
trying to bring the catalog up-to-date by weeding titles from the 30s AND
not award winners! Don't districts see the doubling of resources, the
lack of accounting for these things. I am so put out that libraries limp
along on nothing when there is so much spent of books for the Book Room,
book carts, classroom libraries. And then the Literacy Coach had the gall
to come in and tell me the teacher don't use the library because they
can't find things (they aren't real familiar with Dewey) and that multiple
copies should all be removed and relocated to the Book Room. Fortunately,
I counted to 10 and bit my tongue.

This has been one very long year!
