Hello all!
I'm joyfully returning to the library after a 2 year absence. (I've been
teaching art...) This will be the library I once left, but it has been remodeled
and I haven't worked in the new version. I'm excited on many levels! I have a rug
and cushy furniture to place around and I want to really create a warm environment
for the kids. It has tall ceilings, those awful institutional cream-colored walls,
taupe trim, and a cold and colorles tile floor.
The sky is the limit as far as decorations. I want something to make it warmer
and more inviting (less sterile feeling). I'm going to beg my maintenance
superintendent to allow me to paint mural type pictures above the bookcases, as I
don't do ladders well and we don't have any bulletin boards. I'm planning to do my
version of the huge purple dragon that Upstart had a while back over the fiction
section and do animals, rockets, etc., in the non-ficiton section...whatever is
appropriate for the area.
I love the traditional library/reading rooms with warm dark colors and lots of
nooks to read. I can't recreate that where I am, but I want the kids to come in
and not want to leave. We have grades 2 - 4 and they need to be excited about
reading. We haven't had a theme in a while. I suppose I'm not sure what to do. I
had not anticipated returning to the library, so I'd basically squelched any
planning and ideas I've had in a while. I'm thrilled to be returning...it's an
answered prayer. I've just got to get back in the library zone. I've scanned the
archives and didn't see what I needed. Can any of your fertile minds help me out?
Thanks,
Holly Gillum
