As the only staff member at a K-12 school library, I have trained students to
handle checkout for the past nine years. They learn how to use the keyboard to
type in students last names and the scanner on book baracodes. They can override
the overdue or too many book block (I'd rather they get another book, than have the
book go out without being checked out!) I don't try with students younger than
third grade, but it is a tremendous help to me to have students handling the
checkout. Everyone eventually gets a turn to be in charge during scheduled visits,
and they get to pick someone to help them. This enables me to circulate in the
library to provide readers guidance, supervise behind the one tall stack, help
students with the OPAC and the AR quizzing. If there is a problem with checkout I
am available to help. I only have one scanner, but sometimes when the load at the
circ desk is heavy, I bring up the circulation program at another computer and type
in names and barcodes, or let a dextrous student do it. Yes, mistakes are made,
but that even happens when I'm handing the circulation desk, so I can live with it.
If students come into the library when I am out, they can do their own checkout, on
the honor system.
