Here is my original target:
A teacher requested the following:
"I am trying to find reading material for some of the top-notch first grade
readers. I am looking for something other than the popular series that is a
chapter book, yet is age/content appropriate. I've got a bunch of ideas (from my
days w/ lower level third grade readers), but I am not thrilled with them. We are
working on character traits and incorporating background information, so I was
trying to find a book with a couple of good characters that are pretty developed
Do you have any suggestions?"
These are the replies I received:
Max Malone (Herman)
Gooney Bird Greene (Lowry)
Super Emma (Warner)
Otis Spofford (Cleary)
Jake Drake (Clements)
Zooman Sam (Lowry)

If you meant that you wanted a chapter book that wasn't Junie B. Jones, you might
consider Clementine by Pennypacker, the early Amber Brown books by Danziger (or the
longer ones for some readers) and the Sam books from the Anastasia series by Lowry.

Arthur has a chapter book series that would be appropriate. Most kids that age
enjoy Arthur anyway. I got mine from Scholastic, I think, through the book fair.
(That was back when I was a K-12 LMS). Some of my sharper ones could also read The
Berenstain Bears and Clifford and Babar. I know that teachers might tire of these
books, but they are ever popular with the kids.

Did anyone mention Clementine by Sara Pennypacker? I just gave it to one of my
first grade teachers for her top readers.

Oh, you ABSOLUTELY MUST recommend the two Ivy and Bean novels by Annie Barrows.
They're the perfect match for the request
