Hi to all:
I have been told that I will be taking over the computer classes along with my
library classes next year. I currently have a scheduled K-3 (30 min. a week) and a
flexible 4-5 schedule. The library classes have changed to 50 minutes plus there
will be 14 computer classes each 50 minutes long. When I questioned this change I
was told it was in the spirit of the contract and the inequity in some teachers
schedules. When I mentioned my other duties, ordering, processing, ILL, servicing
the teachers with materials for their units, it was argued that the classroom
teachers do not have enough time in their day for some of the things they do and
the aide could help. By the way, the teachers will have more planning time than I
will. I tried to say the library program is different and I got the spirit of the
contract again. I asked them to check with other schools and the superintendent
(new this year) said that her former school's LMS had 36 classes a week. I said I
know of many other schools that are not heavily scheduled and urged them to look at
other library programs. I spoke of the research studies (Colorado etc.)
recommendations and she just agreed but did not change her position. The funny thing
is that one of the board members is an elementary librarian. I really am
discouraged. I would love to hear from any of you with advice or just encourgement.
Thanks in advance.
