I have before me two copies of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. The first
one is a Scholastic paperback, and credits Mark Twain as the author. It
has a Call Number of FIC TWA. The second copy appears to be a hardback
rebind of a paperback, and lists Samuel L. Clemens as the author. It has
a Call Number of FIC CLE. I suppose I could leave the two books as they
are, on the theory that if someone is looking for the title, and
remembers that Mark Twain was really Samuel Clemens, they might go to
CLE and would then find the book, while the student who didn't remember
that would go to TWA and also find the book. On the other hand, I think
I'd rather have the two copies side by side. It seems to me that I
remember that his books ought to be cataloged as TWAIN, no matter what
the title page says, but I also remember something about cataloging "as
is" rather than "as if" so I need some advice. Which way do you go in
your library and why?
Thanks.
