A group of juniors was just in the library, and one of the boys asked
about the swimsuit issue. I kept a straight face as I told him that SI
doesn't send that issue to libraries - if he wanted to see it he would
have to buy his own copy. Of course, I didn't tell him that SI just
started that policy this year.
Actually, as I think about it, SI was pretty shrewd on this one. A
library pays for one copy of a magazine, and a dozen people use it. By
cutting the issue from what they send libraries, they are encouraging
those who want it to either subscribe or buy the individual copy, and as
we all know, the cost of one issue on the newsstand goes a long ways to
towards paying for a year-long subscription.
