The controversy surrounding the swimsuit edition is certainly an interesting one.
When I started here in 1985, I had students asking me about the swimsuit edition
two weeks in advance. To resolve the censorship issue, I would just leave the
issue out for general perusal. Since it would "disappear" relatively quickly, that
would resolve my problems of whether it was appropriate or not for the student
body. Sometimes I would tell students that our building principal was examining
before it was released to the student body. The examination period, of course,
might take some time.
Alas, the swimsuit edition has become quite passé. It hardly draws a
ripple of interest from my students. I mentioned to a few seniors that SI decided
not to send this particular issue to libraries anymore. This was his response:
"All I have to do is do a google image search on the word 'brea**'. I'll see more
than I see in the swimsuit edition".
