Colleagues,
Here is the hit of the computer lab policy of some of the schools.
Thanks again for the responses, it was a great help.
Academic Computer Lab
Use Procedures
1. The teacher must be with the class the while they are in the
computer lab - do not leave the class unattended.
2. While the class is in the computer lab, the door should be
unlocked for teacher and student safety.
a. The door is kept locked when the computer lab is empty of
classes
b. The key is checked out from the library for the class period it is
needed & returned.
3. No food, candy, or drink is allowed in the computer lab.
4. Computers will be logged-in and set for the applications the teacher
has requested.
a. Do not turn off the computers - restarting a computer will
remove settings and the students may not be able to work.
5. The teacher is to walk through the class and monitor each student's
work on the computers. Keep the students working quietly.
6. Each student is to print his name on the "computer assignments in
lab" sheet next to the number of the computer he is working on:
a. This sheet will be picked up by Mrs. Hudson at the end of the day.
b. Each student will be held responsible for the computer he is using
and students may not "trade" computers.
7. The teacher is to remind the students how the lab is to be cleaned up
during the last 5 - 10 minutes of class and the teacher is to check
for each students' compliance before the student is dismissed (Teacher
Check List):
a. Student books are stored in the rack under the student chair to
allow the student room for a notebook and writing space on the computer
table.
b. The keyboard is centered in front of the monitor and pulled to the
front edge of the computer table.
c. The mouse is on the mouse pad next to the right front corner of the
monitor.
d. Trouble cups are sitting next to the left front corner of the
monitor.
e. All computer applications are closed out and the computer screen is
left at the desktop.
f. Computers and monitors are left on - Mrs. Hudson will shut down all
computers at the end of the day.
g. Chairs are pushed under the table.
h. All trash is in the trashcans.
Academic Computer Lab Check List
The teacher and the students are to check for the following items at the
end of every session in the Academic computer lab.
Failure to follow the outlined use procedures and completing the
checklist may result in a class being prohibited from use of the
Academic computer lab.

We don't have a policy, but I think we need one. I would definitely be
interested to know what you find out.
Ours is pretty much sign up first come first serve with an understanding
that a class can be in the lab no more than two days in a row...we have
areas in the library with computers for them to switch to.

Problems noted:
Here is the unofficial and the official:
The Ten Commandments of School Computer Use
1). You are being watched.
* The computers at school are the property of the school.
* Everything you do at school can be tracked, watched and accessed.
* When you use school computers you have no right to privacy or
freedom of speech.
2). You will be held accountable for your actions. (See page 74 in
student handbook)
* If you go to inappropriate websites you will loose your computer
privileges.
* If you access an inappropriate website by mistake leave that site
immediately and don't go back to that site.
* If someone sends an e-mail to you and you open it at school you
can get in trouble for its content even it you didn't write it, so be
careful what you read at school.
* Guard your password so that another student can not use it and
get you in trouble.
3). You must use your own ID and password when using the computers.
4). Not everything you find on the Internet is true or accurate.
* Anyone can create a website and post whatever they want on it.
* You should double-check all information that you find on the
Internet.
* Ask your teachers and librarian for the best websites.
5). All information found on the Internet (including images) is the
property of the person who posted it.
* You must cite the source of the information or picture when you
use this information for an assignment.
* If you copy and paste information or a picture you need to
include the web address where you got this information as well as the
author of the writing or picture.
6). You should not give personal information to anyone you meet on the
Internet.
* You have no way of knowing who the person really is. They could
say they are another student, but in reality be a 60-year-old pervert!
* Do not post a picture of yourself with your name or other
information on the Web.
* Don't believe that other posted pictures are really what the
person posting them really looks like either.
7). Beware of computer scams.
* If you are told you are a "winner" of some prize and all you need
to do is give personal information don't fall for it.
* If anyone on the Internet asks you for money be very wary of
their legitimacy.
* Don't forward e-mails in order to make money or gain some good
luck.
It won't happen!
8). You may not use school computers to harass, put down or intimidate
others.
9). Treat the computers with care so that they will be in working order
at all times.
* You are responsible for the computer you are using so check it
before and after you use it and report any problems immediately.
* We are very lucky to have such nice new equipment. Let's keep it
that way!
10). SAVE, SAVE, SAVE.
* If what you have finished is too much to redo, SAVE IT! Save
often & save in different places.
