I agree with Bonnie that the pre-censorship is disturbing.
Oddly enough, when last year's SI issue came but was not put in the library
mailbox (again), I had finally succeeded in convincing the administration
that it is not appropriate for office personnel to censor mail addressed to
the library.

Subject: Re: Share: SI Swimsuit Issue - not coming your way...
Although I cringe at the SI swimsuit issue every year and provide it
only on request (which rarely happens, happily), I have a philosophical
problem with a publisher choosing to not to send selected issues of
their periodicals to a library that has paid for a subscription.
Perhaps Time will stop including its "Man of the Year" issue, or US News
and World Report will stop including its "Best Hospitals" issue?
Regardless, if a consumer has paid in good faith for an entire year, he
should receive the entire year's subscription. Whether to put every
issue out should be a local library decision, not a unilateral
publisher's one. If a library chooses to throw it away after they have
paid for it, well, then, that's the librarian's selection policy
decision (in honor of our recent censorship/selection discussion)
<grin>.
I propose we inundate SI with claims for the "missing issue" or demands
for refunds, in order to make them re-think this decision. I followed
the link in the Library Journal article to the SI site, entered the info
from my mailing label, and then wrote the following, which you are
welcome to cut and paste:
According to a recent Library Journal article, my library will not be
receiving the SI swimsuit issue. I authorized payment for the entire
year of Sports Illustrated; I expect to receive either EVERY issue
published that year, or a refund for any and all issue(s) you choose not
to send. Please let me know if I will be receiving:
The swimsuit issue
A refund/credit for the newsstand cost of the withheld issue
An extension of one issue on our subscription.
Thank you.

I think we need to send publishers a message... This is a slippery
slope, whether you really want the SI swimsuit issue or not!
Bonnie

Today's Library Link of the Day is to a story on SI's decision to not
send the Swimsuit Issue to libraries and academic institutions.
